The month of May marks the beginning of the summer growing season here in the mountains. The last frost date can vary from year to year, but it’s generally safe to plant heat-loving vegetables after Mother’s Day. At our Blankenship garden, thousands of seeds will be planted this month. Those seeds will grow into thousands of pounds of vegetables to feed Yancey County residents throughout the summer and fall.
To kick off the summer planting season, we are partnering with the local business community to support our programs. Throughout the month of May, over 30 participating stores will be collecting donations to “Plant a Seed this Spring” at Dig In’s gardens. All month long, patrons can add a dollar to purchases, place extra change in the dedicated donation jars, or scan a QR code to donate directly to Dig In’s efforts growing food this year.
Look for these jars at participating stores throughout the month of May!
Participating stores include:
Always Something New
Webb Automotive
Smith’s Barbershop
Heritage Tire
Styles Automotive
and more….
By shopping local and sharing what we have, Yancey County residents can join together this May to ensure that everyone has access to sufficient nutritious food to eat in the months to come.
