Congratulations to the winners of Dig In! Yancey County’s second annual fruit pie bake-off on August 9. Tina Veitch won first prize in the adult competition with her delicious and creative Cherry Cardamom pie.
In the youth competition, Maya Townsend won over the judges with her beautifully decorated Key Lime Pie, while her sister Eilee Townsend placed second with her Mixed Berry Pie. Both developed their skills at pie baking through Thrive Appalachia‘s Kids’ Cafe social entrepreneurship program.
Winners received trophies hand-blown by Hearth Glass, fruit-themed awards from the Fill-More and drinking glasses specially sandblasted with the Dig In! logo by Forde Wilson Glass.
A total of nine pies were submitted for the pie bake-off from adult and youth bakers across the county. Bonnie Gullak of La Petite Baking Company, Simone Travisano of Sweet Simone’s, and Susie Wethington judged the pies based on appearance, crust, filling and flavor.
Other pies featured blueberries, apples, and raspberries. Thank you to Birdfoot for hosting us! All in all, we had a berry good time!
