We’re hosting an Open House about the community composting program we implemented this year! Please join us on Saturday, September 28 from 10 am – 2 pm at our primary growing space on Blankenship Creek Rd. All are welcome to drop by and tour the composting system, ask questions, enjoy snacks, and have a chance to win compost-themed door prizes. Farmer Katie Anne will lead a hands-on demonstration at 1pm.

This pilot year has been a great success. Together, we have diverted more than one ton of organic material from the landfill. Instead, we transformed it into compost — a nutrient and microbe-rich amendment to nourish our soils and help Dig In continue to grow food for all.

We collected kitchen scraps and other compostables from an average of 10-15 households weekly at Harvest Share. Since June, the community has contributed more than 2000 pounds of food waste to our compost program. We also compost our farm residuals like weeds, bean vines, cabbage leaves, and more.

At the farm, we use a three-bin hot composting system. We combine the community food scraps and farm residuals with wood chips and sawdust. Then, We mix all the material together and turn by hand as it decomposes over a period of 2-6 weeks. The farm team will apply the compost we’ve made this season to the beds later this fall, which will enrich soils over the winter.

Everyone is invited out to see the compost system in action on Saturday, September 28th. Drop by anytime between 10 am and 2 pm with your household compostables, curiosity, and questions. We’ll have lots of giveaways: compost buckets with screw-on lids and door prizes (including a bag of Dig In compost).

See here for a list of what household compostables Dig In collects. For questions about the event, contact Katie Anne at towner@diginyancey.org or 828-536-0414.
